Welcome to our Weekly Breakdown for Week 12 of the Gracie Barra Fundamentals Curriculum! We are excited for a week of back takes and control for everyone! In addition, our GBK Programs will be learning rear choke escapes and hip throws! Adults and Teens are diving in to bear hug escapes and counter takedowns.

🗣️Word of The Week: Mindfulness

The word of the week is mindfulness. Mindfulness, the practice of being present and fully engaged in the moment, has profound applications in jiu-jitsu. By integrating mindfulness into training and practice, students can enhance their performance, improve their mental well-being, and deepen their understanding of the art.

Tiny Champions (3-4 years old) & Little Champions 1 (5-6 years old):

Class A: Self Defense

Standing Rear Choke Escape 1 In Class A, students will be introduced to Standing Rear Choke Escape . This technique focuses on effectively defending oneself when caught in a standing rear choke. The escape will be performed with careful attention to maintaining balance and control.

Ground Technique: Back or Turtle

Back Take From Turtle Top Next, the ground technique for the week will be the Back Take From Turtle Top. This move is crucial for gaining a dominant position when the opponent is in the turtle position. Emphasis will be placed on the smooth transition and control required to execute this technique effectively.

Class B: Stand Up Technique

Headlock Takedown (Blue Section) / Hip Throw Controlling the Head (Yellow Section) In Class B, students will practice different stand-up techniques based on their section. The blue section will focus on the Headlock Takedown, a practical move for taking down an opponent who has applied a headlock. The yellow section will learn the Hip Throw Controlling the Head, a powerful technique to off-balance and throw the opponent while maintaining control of their head.

Ground Technique: Back or Turtle

Back Take From Turtle Top The same ground technique as in Class A will be practiced here, reinforcing the skill of taking the back from the turtle position.

Little Champions 2 (7-9 years old) & Juniors (10-13 years old):

Class A: Self Defense

Rear Choke Escape 1: Forward & Rear Choke Escape 2: Backwards Students will begin by learning two essential self-defense techniques for escaping rear chokes. The first technique, Rear Choke Escape 1: Forward, focuses on moving forward to break free from the choke. The second technique, Rear Choke Escape 2: Backwards, emphasizes moving backwards to create space and escape the choke hold. These techniques are vital for personal safety and developing confidence in self-defense situations.

Ground Technique: Back or Turtle

Instructor’s Choice: Attacks During the ground technique segment, the instructor will choose specific attacks from the back or turtle position. This personalized instruction will allow students to explore various offensive strategies, tailored to their current skill levels and needs. The focus will be on understanding the mechanics and execution of effective attacks, enhancing their ability to control and submit their opponent from these positions.

Class B: Stand Up Technique

Hip Throw Hooking the Shoulder In Class B, the emphasis will be on a stand-up technique known as the Hip Throw Hooking the Shoulder. This powerful technique involves using the hips and shoulder control to off-balance and throw the opponent. It is an effective method for gaining a dominant position in a stand-up confrontation, and it will be practiced with attention to detail and proper form.

Ground Technique: Back or Turtle

Instructor’s Choice: Attacks Similar to Class A, the ground technique session in Class B will involve the instructor selecting specific attacks from the back or turtle position. This allows for a tailored approach to learning, ensuring that students are exposed to a variety of techniques that suit their current abilities and learning goals.

GB1 Adults & Teens Fundamentals (Tue. & Thu. 6:00pm):

Class A

Self-Defense: Clinch & Holds

Firstly, students will be taught the escape from a front bear hug over the arms, which will be followed by a hip throw and transition to knee on belly.

Sport Jiu-Jitsu: Back / Turtle

Next, the focus will shift to taking the back from the turtle position, using a seatbelt grip to open space for the hook. Additionally, the clock choke will be introduced.

Class B

Self-Defense: Clinch & Holds

First, the class will learn the escape from a rear bear hug over the arms, followed by a rear takedown and transitioning to side mount control.

Sport Jiu-Jitsu: Back / Turtle

Subsequently, attention will be given to taking the back from the turtle position using a lapel grip (Technique 71). Moreover, the two collars choke and rear naked choke will be taught.

No-Gi Adults & Teens:

Class A

Stand Up Technique: Foot Throws or Leg Throws

Initially, students will practice the fake guard pull ankle pick .

Ground Technique: Back or Turtle

Following this, the ground techniques will include the seat belt to rear naked choke and the seat belt arm triangle .

Class B

Stand Up Technique: Foot Throws or Leg Throws

To begin, the step back ankle pick will be introduced (Technique 70).

Ground Technique: Back or Turtle

Next, students will learn the kimura trap to arm bar and the kimura trap to triangle.
