🥋Week 8 Breakdown!🥋
Now is Week #8 of the Gracie Barra Fundamentals Curriculum! Thank you for checking out our Week 8 Breakdown! All kids classes will get valuable practice on how to escape and counter takedown someone who has a two handed choke from the front (bully choke). For takedowns, all kids will be learning the ever-so-effective double leg takedown! On the ground, they’re learning how to be offensive from top side mount! Adults are getting additional practice at how to block a variety of punches from standing, and countering into takedowns. For sport jiu-jitsu, they’re learning transitions to the mount from side control, and even a couple submissions! Stay tuned for next weeks technique breakdown!
We always strive to provide our students with the best foundation for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Self-Defense that we can!
🗣️ Word of The Week: NON-QUITTING
This phrase may sound familiar to our students. It is the last thing said in our Student Creed before our classes begin. A non-quitting attitude is so important in self-defense and jiu-jitsu, but in life as well. If you find yourself in a self-defense situation, jiu-jitsu match, or in everyday life, you must continue to fight to make it through. Fighting through gives you the experience to know that you are always capable of pushing forward. If we train with a non-quitting attitude, then we take that mentality throughout our lives.
Tiny Champions (3-4) & Little Champions 1 (5-6):
Class A
- Self-Defense: During Week 8, the focus shifts to self-defense techniques against a 1 or 2 handed front choke, commonly known as the “bully choke.” In this week’s curriculum, emphasis is placed on teaching TC and LC1 how to defend against the choke and execute a counterattack with a takedown.
- Ground Technique: The sport jiu-jitsu technique is setting up and controlling the side mount. Side mount is highly effective in both jiu-jitsu and self-defense scenarios. Our TC and LC1 classes will receive practice on effectively utilizing side mount, by setting up the proper grips, knee placement, and control.
Class B
- Takedown Technique: The sport jiu-jitsu takedown for the week is called the Double Leg Takedown. It is a takedown derived from wrestling. As always, this technique can be used for sport jiu-jitsu and self-defense. This takedown can be set up with grips on our opponent or without. It’s applied by grabbing behind the knees, and driving your opponent backwards to take them down.
- Ground Technique: For Class B, the classes will be practicing the same techniques as Class A. Practice makes perfect, so the goal is for them to master the control of side mount this week!
Little Champions 2 (7-9) & Juniors (10-13):
- Self-Defense: For Week 8, both LC2 and Juniors will learn the same self-defense technique of TC & LC1. A person untrained in jiu-jitsu will commonly try to choke someone with one or two hands. We must all practice these techniques to be prepared for any situations!
- Ground Technique: The sport jiu-jitsu technique is setting up and controlling the side mount. For LC2 & Juniors the focus is how to be offensive from there is important. This week is learning “attacks” which can mean submissions or transitions to better positions. It is determined by the instructor what they will learn!
- Ground Technique: To finish Class B, they will practice different types of “attacks” from side mount.
GB1 Adults & Teens Fundamentals (Tue. & Thu. 6:00pm):
Class A
- Self-Defense: The self-defense focus shifts for the Adults & Teens Fundamentals Classes. The shift for Class A is how to block a hook punch and how to preform a headlock takedown as a counter, and finish with a straight armbar.
- Ground Technique: Side Mount
- Technique 1: Transition to mount by switching to rear facing side mount, controlling the leg and stepping over.
- Technique 2: Staying in side mount and executing the Paper Cutter Choke. This is a choke utilizing the lapels of our opponent from side mount.
Class B
- Self-Defense: Class B transitions to how to ‘slip’ a jab punch and set up a rear body lock. The takedown best applied from there is to block the knee and takedown forward.
- Ground Technique: Side Mount
- Technique 1: Transition to the mount by sliding the knee across the belly. This is effective to prevent the opponent from catching the half-guard.
- Technique 2: From top side mount a submission often presents it self. The submission is a spinning armbar and includes a quick transition to an armbar that exposes an opponents attempt to escape.
No-Gi GBK, Adults & Teens:
GBK Programs: All of our GBK classes are learning the same techniques this week. This means that the focus for No-Gi will be introducing all the techniques of the week with a No-Gi uniform. As always, this is an important time for them to utilize self-defense techniques with a more realistic approach.
Adults & Teens: Adults & Teens will introduce a takedown from setting up an Uchi Mata and finishing with an ankle pick takedown. On the ground, the focus is how to escape from side control. This will include one standard escape, and one escape variation with an armbar finish.
