As we embark on Week 9 of the Gracie Barra Saddle Rock Jiu-Jitsu Fundamentals curriculum, we turn our attention to a principle that is foundational to our practice: Safety. This week, students of all ages will learn techniques designed not only to protect themselves but also to ensure the safety of their training partners. Understanding and practicing safety is essential in Jiu-Jitsu, where respect and care for one another are paramount.
Tiny Champions & Little Champions 1 (Ages 3-6) – Light Blue
For our youngest members in Tiny Champions (ages 3-4) and Little Champions 1 (ages 5-6), safety is introduced through simple and effective self-defense techniques. These sessions are designed to build confidence while ensuring that our little champions learn how to protect themselves in a controlled and safe environment.
Class A:
- Self Defense: Front Bear Hug Escape
- Ground Technique (Guard Bottom): Sweep from Guard Running to the Back
- Specific Training: Guard Bottom
Class B:
- Stand Up Technique: Judo Grips Basics + Four Directions Off Balancing Drill
- Ground Technique (Guard Bottom): Sweep from Guard Running to the Back
- Specific Training: Guard Bottom
Little Champions 2 & Juniors (Ages 7-13) – Orange
In Week 9, our Little Champions 2 (ages 7-9) and Juniors (ages 10-13) will focus on more advanced techniques that emphasize the importance of maintaining control while ensuring the safety of themselves and their partners. The curriculum balances self-defense and sport jiu-jitsu, teaching students how to execute techniques effectively without compromising safety.
Class A:
- Self Defense: Front Bear Hug Escape Over the Arms + Hip Throw
- Ground Technique (Guard Bottom): Instructor’s Choice: Sweeps & Submissions
- Specific Training: Guard Bottom
Class B:
- Stand Up Technique: Judo Grips Basics + Off Balancing Drill + Inside Hook Takedown
- Ground Technique (Guard Bottom): Instructor’s Choice: Sweeps & Submissions
- Specific Training: Guard Bottom
Adults & Teens Fundamentals Class – Dark Blue
Our adults and teens will dive into techniques that emphasize safety through proper execution and awareness of surroundings. The focus this week will be on defensive maneuvers that prioritize self-preservation while offering opportunities for counterattacks. The balance between self-defense and sport jiu-jitsu is carefully maintained to ensure that safety remains at the forefront of every technique.

- Self-Defense (Strike): Blocking Punches from the Turtle Position + Recovering the Guard
- Sport Jiu-Jitsu (Guard Bottom): Pendulum Sweep + Straight Armbar from Closed Guard
- GB1 Drill: Pendulum Sweep + Mount + Knee Elbow Mount Escape
- Specific Training: Guard
- GB1 Talking Point: The GB Method
Class B:
- Self-Defense (Strike): Block Punches from Knee on Belly + Transition to Turtle + Recovering the Guard
- Sport Jiu-Jitsu (Guard Bottom): Taking the Back from Closed Guard + Triangle from Closed Guard Controlling the Sleeve and the Wrist
