This week at Gracie Barra Saddle Rock Jiu-Jitsu, we are delighted to continue our journey through the Gracie Barra Fundamentals Curriculum with the Word of the Week: ‘Purpose.’ As we dive into Week 6 Jiu-Jitsu Fundamentals, each age group will tackle specialized techniques, focusing on self-defense, takedowns, and ground work. Here’s a detailed look at the curriculum for each group:

This week’s focus on “Purpose” underscores our commitment to not just learning techniques, but understanding their strategic application in both self-defense scenarios and competitive settings. Each class is designed to equip our students with the necessary skills to progress in their Jiu-Jitsu journey while reflecting on the purpose behind each move.
Tiny Champions & Little Champions 1: Ages 3-6
Building Essential Skills Through Fun and Engagement
- Class A: Self-Defense
- Self-Defense: Learning distance management and head cover blocks to avoid strikes.
- Takedown Technique: Introducing the body lock takedown to control opponents safely.
- Ground Technique: Practicing back or turtle escapes to overcome disadvantageous positions.
- Class B: Ground Technique and Stand-Up
- Self-Defense: Focusing on distance management and head cover blocks to improve reaction to threats.
- Takedown Technique: Mastering the body lock takedown for effective opponent control.
- Ground Technique: Enhancing skills in back or turtle escapes, emphasizing quick recovery.
Little Champions 2 & Juniors: Ages 7-13
Advancing Technique with Confidence and Control
- Class A: Self-Defense and Ground Technique
- Self-Defense: Perfecting the standing headlock escape with punches to ensure safety.
- Stand-Up Technique: Practicing pulling to the guard, crucial for ground fighting transitions.
- Ground Technique: Instructor’s choice of escapes, tailored to foster adaptability and quick thinking.
- Class B: Stand-Up Technique and Ground Technique
- Self-Defense: Deepening knowledge in standing headlock escapes involving strikes.
- Stand-Up Technique: Enhancing skills in pulling to the guard for effective defensive strategies.
- Ground Technique: Instructor’s choice of escapes, focusing on practical application and awareness.
Adults & Teens Fundamentals
Refining Techniques for Practical Application and Competition
- Class A: Self-Defense and Sport Jiu-Jitsu
- Self-Defense: Executing escapes from ground headlocks, combining head push and armbar techniques.
- Sport Jiu-Jitsu: Recovering the guard from rear and front turtle positions to maintain defensive superiority.
- Specific Training: Practicing bridge escapes from the back to side mount, focusing on fluid transitions.
- Class B: Self-Defense and Sport Jiu-Jitsu
- Self-Defense: Learning headlock escapes that transition into taking the back and applying a shoulder lock.
- Sport Jiu-Jitsu: Bridge escapes from the back avoiding the mount and transitioning to side mount top.
- Specific Training: Emphasizing transitions to the mount to enhance control and positional advantage.
