Week 5 at Gracie Barra Saddle Rock: Jiu-Jitsu Builds Strength

At Gracie Barra Saddle Rock Jiu-Jitsu, we believe that strength goes far beyond muscle. It shows up in resilience, discipline, and the courage to show up again and again — no matter your age or experience level. That’s why our Word of the Week is: STRENGTH.

As we enter Week 5 of the Gracie Barra Fundamentals Curriculum, students across all programs will be training techniques that reinforce physical, mental, and emotional strength on the mat. This week’s theme centers on guard bottom, one of the most foundational — and empowering — positions in Jiu-Jitsu.

Jiu-Jitsu builds strength — and this week’s lessons are a testament to that.

Adults & Teens Fundamentals (Dark Blue)

Students in our adult and teen classes will be focused on situational control from the guard bottom position. Confidence in this position allows practitioners to stay calm under pressure and turn defense into opportunity.

Class A:

  • Self-Defense: Distance Management + Head Cover Block + Body Lock Clinch to the Back

  • Ground Technique: Sit Up Sweep

  • Specific Training: Guard Bottom

Class B:

  • Stand-Up Technique: One Hand Shoulder Throw

  • Ground Technique: Sit Up Sweep

  • Specific Training: Guard Bottom

Each movement this week has been chosen to build technical precision and functional strength.

Little Champions 2 (7–9) & Juniors (10–13)

This week, older kids will learn how to use leverage and positioning to their advantage. These are key moments where Jiu-Jitsu builds strength — especially in the face of resistance.

Class A:

  • Self-Defense: Headlock Escape 1 – Roll Reversal

  • Ground Technique: Instructor’s Choice (Sweeps & Submissions)

  • Specific Training: Guard Bottom

Class B:

  • Stand-Up Technique: One Hand Shoulder Throw to the Knees

  • Ground Technique: Instructor’s Choice (Sweeps & Submissions)

  • Specific Training: Guard Bottom

Through consistent drilling, students will learn how technique can overcome size and force.

Tiny Champions (3–4) & Little Champions 1 (5–6)

For our youngest students, Week 5 is all about establishing body awareness and building confidence through fun, structured movement. Even at this early stage, Jiu-Jitsu builds strength in amazing ways.

Class A:

  • Self-Defense: Blocking Punches from Closed Guard + Distance Management + Control the Arms + Armbar

  • Sport Jiu-Jitsu:

    • Pull Feet Sweep

    • Waiter Sweep

  • GB1 Drill: Guard Sweep Series + Mount + Escape

  • Talking Point: The GB Method

Class B:

  • Self-Defense: Blocking Punches + Distance + Up Kick + Technical Lift

  • Sport Jiu-Jitsu:

    • Tripod Sweep

    • Outside Hook Sweep (when Tripod is defended)

  • GB1 Drill: Tripod Sweep + Technical Lift + Closed Guard Flow

  • Talking Point: The GB Method

These core concepts are taught in a playful but structured way, giving kids a powerful sense of capability early on.

Why Strength Matters in Jiu-Jitsu

Whether it’s the ability to recover from a failed sweep or the mental toughness to keep learning after a tough round, Jiu-Jitsu builds strength in every practitioner. Our curriculum is designed not only to teach techniques — but to shape character and mindset.

We invite all students and parents to embrace this week’s lessons with intention and enthusiasm. When practiced with consistency, Jiu-Jitsu becomes a lifestyle — and strength becomes second nature.
