Week 4 at Gracie Barra Saddle Rock: Mount and Knee on Belly + Discipline

At Gracie Barra Saddle Rock, each week of the curriculum is carefully structured to build confidence, sharpen skills, and reinforce the values that define Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. This week, our focus is on two essential positions — Mount and Knee on Belly. Whether students are learning how to transition to these dominant positions or defend and escape from them, the skills taught this week are both practical and empowering.

Our Word of the Week is Discipline. More than just showing up to class, discipline means staying focused during training, respecting your instructors and teammates, and following through even when it gets tough. On the mats and in life, discipline is the foundation for growth.

Adults & Teens Fundamentals

In our adult and teen classes, the week centers around building pressure and control from the Mount and Knee on Belly positions.

  • Class A:

    • Self-Defense: Two-hand throat grab escape

    • Technical sequence: Block knee strike → Body lock takedown → Transition to mount

    • Sport Jiu-Jitsu: Escape from mount using elbows when the opponent keeps their arms tight

    • Drill: Recover guard + Over the leg pass + Control from knee on belly

  • Class B:

    • Self-Defense: Headlock escape with transition to mount

    • Sport Jiu-Jitsu: Push the belt knot from knee on belly + ankle pick

    • GB1 Drill: Same sequence, with partners alternating roles

    • Talking Point: The GB Brotherhood — highlighting the power of team connection

The Mount and Knee on Belly focus helps students understand the value of positional control, while the self-defense elements prepare them for real-world situations.

Tiny Champions (Ages 3–4) & Little Champions 1 (Ages 5–6)

For our youngest champions, movement, safety, and confidence are emphasized throughout their introduction to Mount and Knee on Belly.

  • Class A:

    • Self-Defense: Distance management and blocking

    • Ground technique: Mount control from side control

    • Game-based drills reinforce technical concepts

  • Class B:

    • Stand-Up Technique: Headlock takedown

    • Ground technique: Transitioning to mount

    • Fun-specific training helps them retain movement patterns

Students build discipline through consistency and structured drills. These early lessons set the tone for success on and off the mats.

Little Champions 2 (Ages 7–9) & Juniors (Ages 10–13)

As coordination and awareness improve, these students take on a more detailed approach to the Mount and Knee on Belly positions.

  • Class A:

    • Self-Defense: Round kick defense + double leg

    • Ground technique: Instructor’s choice – typically mount escape and mount control

    • Positional sparring: Reinforces transitions and defense

  • Class B:

    • Stand-Up Technique: Headlock takedown

    • Ground technique: Instructor’s choice – mount or knee on belly sequences

    • Specific training builds confidence in live rolling

This week’s focus will enhance their control, boost resilience, and help them understand how to apply technique over strength — a key lesson in discipline.

Why We Focus on Mount and Knee on Belly

Mastery of Mount and Knee on Belly develops:

  • Positional awareness

  • Balance and pressure

  • Effective transitions for both offense and defense

  • Strong foundations for submission setups

No matter the age or rank, students benefit greatly from practicing these techniques. While learning to control the mount, they also learn how to remain composed under pressure — both physically and mentally.

Word of the Week: Discipline

Discipline is more than showing up. It means doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. It’s staying consistent, listening carefully, and giving your best effort every time you train. From tying your belt to finishing your drills strong, discipline is present in every detail.

At Gracie Barra Saddle Rock, we believe that discipline builds champions. It creates habits that carry into school, work, and family life. It teaches our students that success is earned — step by step, class by class.
